An actual piece of American history issued during Reconstruction. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images, issued contemporary to the events.

Original late 19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue.

During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era.

Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued.

Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. 

Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W.

Although there are many fine prints in this issue, likely the most desired is the very nice full page by Winslow Homer: "Dad's Coming". 

Front full page Thomas Nast illustration of "Tammany Hall Will Whip Creation This Fall." Inside are two 1/2 page illustration pertaining to "The Manufacture of Iron" including "...Filling the Furnace" and "...Carting Away the Scorle." Full page illustration of "The Manufacture of Iron - Tapping the Furnace." Full page illustration of "New York Harbor, As Seen From the Brooklyn Tower of the Suspension Bridge." 1/2 page illustration of "An Aurochs Hunt By the Lake Dwellers."

Two 1/4 page illustration of "The Model Bank Director and The Model Cashier" and "The Gentlemanly Bank Defaulter and The Vagrant." Several small portraits and illustration pertaining to "Philip Embury, the First Methodist Preacher in America" including "Barbara Heck," "Philip Embury," "Mrs. Philip Embry," Monument to Philip Embury," and "The First Methodist Church, in John Street, New York."

The supplement contains a large 1/2 page portrait of "Major General Sir Garnet Wolseley, K.C.M.G., C.B., Commander of the Ashantee Expedition." 1/3 page illustration of "The Civil War in Spain - View of Alicante, Bombarded by the Intransigents." Two 2/3 page illustration including "The Ashantee War - Traveling on the West Coast of Africa" and "Praying for Deliverance from Cholera - A Roadside Sketch in Austrian Poland."
