Published 1856, New York and Auburn by Miller, Orton, and Mulligan.
352 pages plus advertiser's catalog. Text in English. Illustrated throughout with wood engraved plates or vignette images of state seals.Â
Large folding map "A New Map of the Great West" on bond paper at front (publ. by E.F. Beadle, Buffalo, NY).
Publisher's cloth binding, gilt title lettering & pictorial cover decorations, embossed cover decorations.
With the often missing large folding map which includes a large Minnesota and a huge Nebraska over to the Rocky Mountains. Kansas has no clear western boundary, Cherokees inhabit the entire region south of it.
Map displays well, but has some extraneous fold line creasing, fold line splits and several neat archival tape repairs on the reverse to close edge tears. The inset tab at middle right edge has been torn off from map sheet and re-attached in a manner easy to overlook or forgive visually.
Book is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding gently age worn, joints slightly scuffed, spine ends frayed, board edges slightly frayed, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, slight minor edge staining to title leaf and a few other pages, internally still mostly clean, well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.Â
