Romola, by George Eliot.
Published c. 1880's, Philadelphia by Henry T. Coates & Co.
2 volume. 474, 487 pages. Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout with dozens of finely printed photogravure plates (by A.W. Elson & Co., using the Gilbo Process), many views around Florence, Italy.
1/2 leather binding, raised & gilt bands, gilt compartment decorations & title lettering, marbled end papers, top edge gilt.
Set is approaching 140+ years old and shows some clear signs of handling and time. Item is not new or in "new" condition.
Bindings gently age worn, leather rubbed but still supple, joints scuffed, vol. 1 front board joint is cracked, spine ends chipped, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, internally still clean, well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Set displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
