To Which Are Added the Several Laws Relative to the Army; the Militia When in Actual Service; Volunteers; Rangers; Ordnance Department, and the Quarter Master's and Commissary General's Departments.
Published 1812, Albany by Websters and Skinners.
118 pp. followed by Publishers 2 sided advertisement leaf.; 60 pp. Owners name handwritten with quill pen Wm. Kellogg, Hudson (NY?), 1815, 1816" on ffep. Likely an association copy which we have not researched but offer as acquired.
The book continues with a Supplementary Index, 1-60 pp. on Recruitment of Troops [which is perhaps lacking a fold out diagram table between pgs 52-53?].
Second 60 pp. work text begins with "Recruiting Instructions from the Adjutant General's Office, Washington City, Jan. 1813". This contains much detailed information including a two page Table of the Monthly Pay and Subsistence Allowance for the Troops of the US Army which is broken down into grades and roles and what the specific pay and rations would be at that rank or position. Specific duties of all the listed military positions is detailed in the pages which follow. Numerous in-text letter press signatures of President's George Washington and James Madison for Acts and directives they wrote [Washington Acts are dated 1795].
1/4 leather binding, paper covered boards, smooth spine, gilt bands & title lettering.
Book is physically old and shows some clear and obvious signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in "new" condition.
Binding well and heavily age worn from useage, leather rubbed but still supple, joints scuffed, both covers rubbed down to expose boards, remains overall attractive as an early American military book.
Text block paper is toned, moderate to heavy scattered age spotting, pg. 109 edge chipped touching into loss of a few letters, a couple short edge tears closed with archival tape, internally still well preserved, tight, sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a unique age patina, in our opinion any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
Please review photos for more detail and our best attempt to convey how this rare and fascinating antique arly military book survives.
