Book is physically old and shows some clear signs of handling and time. Book is shaken with text block loosened, a hardback heavy book bound entirely in paper, no cloth. The spine and joints, plus obviously gutters, board edges, hinges etc. all paper. Please view pics, we're doing all we can to openly present how it truly survives.
Publisher's pictorial paper covered boards. Numerous illustrations, photographs and various plates, at rear is a wonderful 98 pg. pictorial advertisement section which is filled with eye pleasing line drawings and advertising related art work
Photographs seen within include team pictures of the Crew team, baseball team, football team and Track team. All individuals pictured are identified.
Scarce book in any condition, this example displaying the clear signs of some extensive handling and useage. Whoever originally owned this book over 130 years ago really used it to the point the text block is "shaken", meaning the sewn gatherings of folded pages are loosened and no longer tight and square as a book text block is when issued.
This overall typical condition is largely due to the original inherently fragile and unsturdy nature of the entirely paper binding style used (an obviously very fragile binding type which is only rarely found on 19th century or any books actually, from any era). A fascinating survival because of how it it survives (much handling and reading) as well as what it actually is (great historical one-off souvenir historical Yale artifact filled with great visual content, including photographs identifying over 3 dozen athletes).
The original paper binding rubbed and age worn but yet still intact. Spine ends chipped, paper joints worn, any surviving example such as this worthy of consideration given that inherent scarcity element of the item itself. Text block shaken with some pages and gatherings loosened, chipping to paper at spine ends, scuffing and rubbing, but nothing offensive or severe, book remains overall attractive as an object. Rare and wonderful book, the contents a deep well of visual delight, dozens of attractive and interesting designs throughout.
Still attractive on the table or shelf. The book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in overall fairly nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws which may be present seem easy to overlook or forgive.
The asking price reflects the condition based on our examination using 40+ years full time exposure to antiquarian books, maps and printed ephemera of all types and genres. Flaws seen and/ or described, plus market, etc. have all been taken into account.
